Biography

Joel Marcus cut his teeth on the streets of SoHo London in the early nineties, where he served his apprenticeship under some of the finest film editors of the time.  His first foray into post-production was as a sound editor, working on dramas and docs, including a BBC Omnibus special, History of HMV, and the 5-part BBC drama Thin Air. Distinctly sensitive to pacing, rhythm and tone, it wasn’t long before the BBC, C4, and ARTE France tapped Joel to edit picture on a wide variety of projects, and his career took off.

Bringing a certain level of style and sophistication to his craft, Joel’s unique perspective on filmmaking, art, music and culture has made him a highly sought-after talent, attracting the likes of Nike, Vans, Lexus, Coke and many other top international brands, along with a roster of esteemed bands and musicians that includes Oasis, U2, Paul Weller, Nick Cave, and Damian Marley to name but a few.  Joel has had the oppurtunity and privelage to work all over the world with some of the best creative minds, picking up many awards along the way.

Joel has recently completed As I AM: the Life and Times of DJ AM Directed (by frequent collaborator) Kevin Kerslake. As I AM is an exhilarating, immersive experience that deftly explores many issues at once — fame, addiction, passion, family and identity. It has been Universaly well received by both critics and audiences alike and has been screened at several film festivals, including Tribeca (New York) Hot Docs (Toronto) the Philadelphia film festival, Kitzbuhel (Austria) as well as many others and is due for general release early next year.

A staple of Venice Beach, California, Joel can often be found taking breaks from editing and meandering from coffee shop to coffee shop provoking conversation and musing on the idiosyncrasies and curiosities of life, love, politics music, and his beloved Manchester United.
